Transformational Moment in My Life
Fall of 2012 I had a vision to expand the Centers for Spiritual Living’s reach and impact. The vision was of our Centers around the world serving their communities on the same day and maximizing media coverage while doing so. World Day of Service was born out of this vision. It is now an annual event for Centers for Spiritual Living and the Capital District International New Thought Movement.
Transformational leaders have big visions and they press forward to make them realities. I am now at the Corporate Leadership table adding my voice, ideas and Divine impulsion to affect positive change in the world.
What is the key component that sets Transformational Leaders apart from other leaders?
Transformational leaders embrace change and think both strategically and systemically. They have an awareness of the far reaching impact of their decisions with the recognition that what is done in one corner of the earth will affect the rest of the globe because of our interdependent and interconnected societies. Transformational leaders are visionaries with both acute short and long-term sight whose dreams are anchored by reality.
The toughest decision I have ever made as a leader was to upset the status quo by standing up for fairness and efficacy which are often conflicting ideas. Diplomacy and strategy were essential to effecting sustainable change in the long-run with the present chaos the decision created.
Most leaders forget what motivates and inspires people. Inspiration comes when people feel that they are valued and appreciated. Too many leaders have forgotten the tremendous affect of reward and recognition and dispense both sparingly. Modeling behavior is powerful and eliminates the need for a lot of words. Seeing my leader standing or what he/she believes in is a powerful motivator.
One mistake that I made as a leader that provided a great lesson was to assign a group of volunteers to support one another when there was no natural affinity. I now know that people of like minds and affinity towards similar interests will find one another, coalesce around their commonalities and work together to the common good.
My vision is to empower individuals who make up organizations that affect positive change—transformation in the world. My philosophy is simple: changing the way we think about adversity changes perspective providing a different viewpoint from a place that transcends it.
I know for sure that each person creates his own reality and that reality can change as soon as the beliefs that undergird it is changed.
General Advice for Transformational Leaders
Transformation requires the radical change which means that sacred cows must be put to pasture to make way for new and revolutionary ways of meeting business goals and objectives; while simultaneously providing outrageous care to those they lead. The only cosmological constants are change and ambiguity so embrace them, while finding the balance between what is and the promise of what can be.
We’d love to hear what you think of these transformational ideas and concepts. Please feel free to share.
